Natural Disasters in Asia-Pacific
Demonstrates Habitat for Humanity’s Responses

A string of natural disasters have hit the
Asia-Pacific: the Padang and West Java earthquakes struck
Indonesia; a tsunami hit Samoa; the Typhoon Ketsana hit
Philippines, Vietnam and Cambodia. Habitat for Humanity responded
quickly to all these disasters to help the badly affected people.
Usually, a Habitat for Humanity team would make an initial
assessment of the damage. Then the staff and volunteers will focus
on house construction, and provide immediate needs of water and
sanitation facilities and the likes.
Based on its experiences from past projects, Habitat for
Humanity will implement a community-based disaster response plan
where local leaders and people are mobilized to carry out
reconstruction based on the principle of community self-help.
At Padang, southern Sumatra of Indonesia, a team
from Habitat for Humanity Indonesia has made an assessment of the
damage. Most likely Habitat for Humanity will build houses based on
the “core house” design implemented in 2006 Yogyakarta earthquake
project.
Other works there would include repair and rehabilitation,
water and sanitation, debris removal with a cash-for-work component
and the distribution of housing materials and construction tools.
Meanwhile, the first phase of construction for the earthquake which
hit West Java is proceeding. The first 200 homes are due to
complete by December.
Habitat for Humanity New Zealand has launched its Project
Samoa Hope, a shelter response to the
Samoan tsunami to support the Samoan community in
partnership with the New Zealand government and other
non-governmental organizations for the repair and construction of
emergency and long-term shelter as well as water and sanitation
facilities.
In Philippines, local Habitat staff and volunteers
are focusing on providing water and sanitation facilities. The
first eight sanitation stations at the Nangka center were completed
on 5th October while another eight are under-construction. It
coordinated the distribution of donated food, clothing, blankets,
towels and bedding. It also mobilized volunteers to provide soup
kitchens in evacuation centers.
In Vietnam, Habitat for Humanity’s rapid
assessment team surveyed conditions among affected families on the
south central coast. Habitat for Humanity Cambodia is working on
offering a transitional shelter solution and latrines, while
planning to offer technical assistance and construction know-how to
families who are rebuilding their houses. It may also work with
existing NGOs in the area that have access to funds for house
construction and are looking for a partner with building expertise.

China’s Sichuan province. Representatives from Hyundai-Kia Motors
Group China who were present at the ceremony included director of
corporate planning, Kim Young-man, and general manager Lee

volunteers were part of a larger group of 500 volunteers called

child or parent, will be sent to Sichuan and used by Habitat
volunteers as they rebuild homes for families who lost their homes
