Sichuan earthquake response

Habitat for Humanity has begun work on the first batch of more than 500 homes as part of the rebuilding following the May earthquake in Sichuan, China. Funding for the project, in three locations within Pengzhou County and Zhongjiang County, is coming from multiple sources, including an in-principle approved amount of US$5 million from Singapore Red Cross, US$400,000 from Flextronics, over US$300,000 from the Hong Kong Christian Council and an additional US$100,000 from other sources. Habitat's Sichuan earthquake reconstruction effort will be driven by a tripartite taskforce of staff based in China, Hong Kong and Singapore. The team will work closely with the local authorities and home owners and will adhere to the government's standardized approach to sharing the cost of reconstruction. In addition to funds, Habitat will lend its project-management expertise and tap into its army of volunteers from around the world. Pengzhou lies 36 km. northwest of Chengdu, capital of Sichuan while Zhongjiang County, in Deyang city, is about 50 km. northeast of the provincial capital. In Pengzhou's Taizi village, in the township of Xiaoyudong, assistance will be extended to a community of 383 families. Read more about the families in Taizi. Rebuilding is expected to take 18 months to complete.

China gets donor’s nod to rebuild in Sichuan

Habitat has received word that the Hong Kong Christian Council has agreed to donate HK$2.33 million (about US$300,400) toward HFH China’s rebuilding in earthquake-torn Sichuan province. The funds would help 111 families rebuild their homes in Jiexing village of Zhongjiang county. The government’s rebuilding program for Sichuan initially indicated houses should cost RMB72,000-84,000 (US$10,570 to US$12,330) each excluding infrastructure. Each household would receive a government rebuilding grant worth RMB16,000-22,000 depending on the number of people in the family: the average is about RMB 20,000 per family.
